Women with very droopy, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of problems such as the loss of self-esteem, extreme self-consciousness and skin irritation underneath the breasts. Bras often don’t fit properly and women may hate removing them due to embarrassment or discomfort. A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is designed for such women. Droopy breasts are a result of loss of weight or loss of breast tissue together with a breast skin envelope that is too big. This can happen in young women who have never had children after weight loss, or in women who have been pregnant, or in women who have breast-fed. It may also happen in women who have had breast implants but no longer need or want them.

The procedure removes excess skin from the breasts, concentrating the existing breast gland in a smaller skin envelope, making them rounder and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to give the woman better-shaped breasts to be proud of.
